Volunteer Guardian

It's important to have support when making big decisions, and you can provide that support for someone with developmental disabilities. In just a few hours each month, you can get to know them and help them reach their goals.

Volunteer Guardians are selected by a county probate court to help individuals make choices about their medical and personal care. They represent the best interests of these individuals.

Cuyahoga DD's legal team supports Volunteer Guardians throughout the process. They assist with legal issues, formal appointments, and any questions that come up. The individual's support team, which includes professionals and direct care providers, works together to help the person reach their goals.

Volunteer Guardian responsibilities

  • Meet in person with the individual at least six times a year. Do other activities as needed.
  • Call or use digital communication with the person or their care provider to check on their well-being during the months you cannot visit.
  • Keep records about your activities with the person you support, as required by Probate Court, Cuyahoga DD, or other service providers.
  • Log the hours you spend as a Volunteer Guardian online each month.
  • Take part in annual training or continuing education.
